- Zone 0: an area where an explosive atmosphere, consisting of a flammable mixture of air and gas/vapour/mist, is continuously present for more than 1000 hours per year.
- Zone 1: an area where an explosive atmosphere, with a flammable mixture of air and gas/vapour/mist, is likely to occur during normal operations for an interval between 10 and 1000 hours per year.
- Zone 2: an area where an explosive atmosphere, with a flammable mixture of air and gas/vapour/mist of short duration and less than 10 hours per year, is not likely to occur during normal operations.
